Summer things to do at night with kids in Massachusetts
Whether it was a visit to a park on a Saturday night in May or a drive-in movie theater on a Friday night in June, my family spent many nights in our family station wagon enjoying the long days of summer nights in Boston. While I spend my time in a SUV or minivan now with my own family, the intent is the same: enjoying the fleeting nights of summer. One way to maximize every minute is to plan some night time activities with the kids. With summer vacation, no homework, and days to sleep in, it is a perfect time to have some pint-size night time fun!
Summer Things To Do At Night With Kids in Massachusetts
The Outdoors at Twilight The Massachusetts Audubon Society is also a great resource for evening outdoor exploration events. With a variety of location across Massachusetts, there is always some nature-inspired kid-friendly activity. For example, sign up for Froggy Night. Kids can learn what makes that high pitched "peep-peep-peep"? Or if the "quack-quack-quack" in the nighttime is a duck or a frog? Or enjoy a Friday night hayride and campfire. Fee applies to both children and adults, and varies from $10+ per person.
A Drive-In Movie at Night Drive-in movie theaters are still a big treat. While many have closed in recent years, there are two that are still open: Mendon Drive-In and Wellfleet. Pack the PJs and snacks, and head out to experience this nostalgic opportunity with modern day blockbusters. Prices vary and concessions are available for purchase.
Stargazing in the Dark Take gazing at the stars to the next level. Head to The Clay Center Observatory in Brookline. Every month, they have various free Public Telescope Nights with views of the city, and small telescopes to observe the moon, and other celestial objects and events.
Grand Views Under the Stars Drive to the Prudential Center in downtown Boston, and take the elevator up to the Skywalk Observatory, Boston's only sky-high vantage point for sweeping 360 degree views of Greater Boston and beyond. The Skywalk is open 7 days a week until 10:00 p.m. Though the Skywalk does close for private functions, so it is best to call ahead to confirm that they will be open. Tickets range from $10+ for children under 12 years of age to $14+ for adults.
Don't forget, a simple drive around town can be fun for the whole family too. Head out for some ice cream, play favorite family tunes and and see where summer life takes you!
